The Compass tab shows the direction the top of your phone is pointing (magnetic azimuth 0–360°).
Modes (toggle above the dial)
- Compass — classic magnetic azimuth dial (no COG arrow)
- HDG + COG — true HDG (magnetic + GPS declination) and GPS COG, both in true north (map-aligned). Green arrow on the dial shows COG. Below the dial: HDG, COG, declination, drift Δ and speed. Without GPS — magnetic heading with a warning.
When HDG + COG makes sense
- Underway from ~2 kn (below that COG is unreliable)
- Phone aligned along the yacht's axis
- Away from engine, switch panel and large metal masses
- Sailing to windward, running with current — shows leeway and drift
How to use
- Hold the phone flat, screen facing up
- Rotate the device — the dial rotates with it
- In Compass mode: N = magnetic north; in HDG + COG (with GPS): N = true north
- The centre shows the current heading in degrees
Above the compass is the navigation panel with place name (when GPS works), coordinates, magnetic variation, GPS signal strength and azimuth.
Requirements: magnetometer and accelerometer. Devices without a magnetometer cannot run the compass. Avoid strong magnetic fields (speakers, motors) near the phone — they disturb readings.
MOB shortcut on the compass screen
- Red floating MOB button — tap to log an event (same as MOB module)
- Long press then drag to reposition the button
- Hidden while the MOB module screen is open
